We are excited to be planning the fifth year of the Shared LCTL Symposium, to be held August 20-21, 2020 in Rosemont, IL! More information about SLCTLS 2020 will be forthcoming in the next month, but we first want to let you know that we will be soliciting proposals for “lightning talks” describing the possible future(s) of less commonly taught and Indigenous language instruction characterized by sustained collaboration, coordination, and interdependence.
Please see the Call for Proposals for how to submit your own proposals for a lightning talk – solo or with a co-presenter, and please forward this call to anyone you think may be interested!
Deadline for submissions is March 31, 2020.

2020 Summer Institute: Planning for Project-Based Language Learning (PBLL)
June 10-16, 2020
This Summer Institute is designed for world language educators who have
some knowledge of Project-Based Learning (PBL) as well as some practice in
generating project ideas. During the Institute, participants will flesh out
their ideas for a project design they have already subjected to critique.
Applicants must complete the *prerequisite* NFLRC MOOC (massive open online
course) Envisioning Project-Based Language Learning

order to qualify for consideration for the Institute. Participants who
fulfill requirements outlined in an associated course syllabus may opt to

SEALC Professional Development Opportunities
The Southeast Asian Language Council (SEALC) has received a grant from the Henry Luce Foundation to offer professional development opportunities to Southeast Asian language instructors and develop instructional materials for the curricula of SE Asian language classes.
To accomplish the above objectives, SEALC offers opportunities for SE Asian language instructors to join training workshops and materials development projects. Fees for the registration, accommodation, and meals during the SEALC workshops are covered for accepted participants.

Successful learners will be able to describe essential features of high
quality PBLL and to generate high-quality ideas for projects using the
Product Square. Registration and the content for this MOOC (massive open
online course) is FREE. However, if you wish to earn the optional digital
badge for completion afterwards, you will need to meet the badge criteria
and pay a nominal fee ($25) to have your submitted materials evaluated by
NFLRC staff.
The following is a selection of targeted learning outcomes for the MOOC:
- identify essential features of high quality project-based learning (PBL)
project designs
- identify key concerns of project-based language learning PBLL compared
to PBL in other disciplines
- describe sources for project ideas
- identify the three dimensions of “authenticity” in projects
- craft an effective “driving question” (challenging question or problem)
- generate multiple project ideas and test them using the Product Square,
aligning product, audience, partners, and purpose
- anticipate "Need-To-Knows" for a project's content, skills, and
management
Instruction spans five modules, for an equivalent of five hours' contact
time (or one-half CEU).

Dear COTSEAL members,
We wish you the happiest of holidays! It seems like the year has flown by! We hope it has been a good one for you. As the year of 2020 is approaching, we’d like to thank every member of their continuous support. The success of COTSEAL network and programs is built on our collaborative efforts – so thank you all.
It has been a great year for COTSEAL. We’ve had successful panel at AAS and conference and workshop at the University of Washington with the supports from the Henry Luce foundation, Southeast Asian NRCs across the country, and Southeast Asian Language Council (SEALC).
It is important for our field of Southeast Asian language teaching to grow. Therefore, we will keep our commitment to advance the field by providing opportunities for professional growth of our members. Please take the opportunities and participate in our upcoming events in 2020:
- COTSEAL panel and business meeting at AAS in Boston on March 20-21,
- COTSEAL conference at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in June,
- SEALC-sponsored workshops (OPG-follow-up Workshop at Ohio University, in September, and Project Based/Heritage Language Teaching Workshop at UCLA in the fall).
We also urge you to participate in the upcoming COTSEAL officer elections in January, 2020.
