The Southeast Asian Language Council (SEALC) invites applications from Southeast Asian language instructors in Southeast Asia for a Reading Materials Development workshop, in collaboration with and hosted by Chulalongkorn University in Thailand from March 9-11, 2023. This professional development opportunity will provide a valuable opportunity for participants to collaborate with colleagues in Southeast Asia as well as colleagues in the United States to develop reading proficiency lessons  for the field of Southeast Asian languages. Lodging, meals, workshop fees, airfare and modest honorarium are provided for all participants.

 

Activities

March 9-11, 2023 Workshop (in person at Chulalongkorn University, Thailand): Participants will receive intensive training on developing reading proficiency materials from Stephen Tschudi, Specialist in Technology for Language Education, University of Hawaii at Manoa (retired) and will produce a prototype reading lessons in collaboration with colleagues from the same language with support from the trainer, Stephen Tschudi, and Erlin Barnard, SEALC pedagogy specialist.

 

March – June 2023 Language-specific working groups of two or more instructors will complete reading proficiency lessons at two levels with support from SEALC.

 

Follow-up workshop (hybrid at UCLA): There will be a two-day follow-up workshop on September 22-23, 2023 at which participants will report on their group’s achievements and receive feedback from the trainers. Once the materials are revised and finalized, the deliverables will be kept on file by SEALC and made accessible to all instructors of that language.

 

Eligibility and Application Process

Applicants must be Southeast Asian language instructors. Additionally, applicants must have attended an ACTFL OPI workshop. Those who successfully completed the SEALC Reading Assessment project in Spring 2022 will receive priority. Participants are asked to request airfare from their home university.  Please note that due to U.S. regulations some visa holders will not be able to receive the honorarium.

SEALC-GETSEA Virtual Language Conversation Groups

 

Dear Southeast Asian language instructors,

 

SEALC and GETSEA are interested in working with you to facilitate setting up virtual language conversation groups. These groups could meet weekly or on a less frequent but regular schedule. Ideally we could offer one group at the beginning/intermediate level and one group at the advanced level per language, depending on language instructor availability and interest. We hope to set these up for all of the Southeast Asian languages regularly taught in North America.

 

The format and schedule can be individualized for each language. These groups need to meet between 3pm and 9pm Eastern Time to accommodate instructors and students who might be anywhere between Hawaii and the East Coast. GETSEA is able to help publicize, coordinate the groups, and set up zoom links.

 

We’d like to identify one or more language instructors per language who would be interested in serving as host and facilitator for a virtual language conversation group. Call for Nominations: SEALC Liaisons (deadline July 1, 2021)

The Southeast Asian Language Council (SEALC) invites nominations for two SEA language instructors to serve as liaisons on the SEALC Steering Committee. The goal of these volunteer positions is to inform and enrich discussions on and planning for SEALC activities via increased SEA language instructor representation on the Committee, as well as to provide additional opportunities for instructors to serve on professional committees at the national level.  

Responsibilities  

SEALC liaisons will attend monthly SEALC Steering Committee meetings as non-voting members and assist in the work of the SEALC committee. The term for SEALC liaisons is one calendar year from the date they are elected.

At this time, Indonesian language instructors are not invited to apply. This is to address the current overrepresentation of Indonesian language instructors on the SEALC Steering Committee.

Call for Applications: SEALC 2021 Publication Workshop, May 14-15, 2021

Hosted by the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at UCLA

SEALC invites applications for an academic publication workshop. The goal of this workshop is to support Southeast Asian language instructors who are interested in submitting their work to academic journals but have little to no prior experience in publishing academically. Participants will be coached by Donna M. Brinton, retired Lecturer in the Department of Applied Linguistics and TESL at UCLA, in an interactive, webinar style workshop. The workshop will be held in two-hour sessions each day, 1-3 PM PT / 3-5 PM CT / 4-6 PM ET / 10 AM – 12 PM HT from May 14-15, 2021, with time for Q+A.

 

Webinar #1 – The Role of Publication in Teacher Professional Development

This webinar focuses on the importance of publication as part of the overall process of professional development. Participants will gain an enhanced understanding of the publication process, beginning with manuscript conception and continuing through determination of relevant journals, submission to the editor, responding to reviewer comments, and submission of the revised publication. Primary focus will be on the factors required for successful publication in the field of language teaching.

 

Webinar #2 – Enhancing Your Chances of Getting Your Research Published

This webinar focuses on how participants can enhance their chances of getting published. Included will be discussion of the various options for submissions (e.g., materials review, literature review, research report), relevant research options (e.g., case study, classroom research, action research), citation requirements and citation resources, issues of academic integrity, and tips for manuscript preparation. Primary focus will be on adhering to standards expected for publication in the field of language teaching.

 

Eligibility and How to Apply

Applicants must be instructors of a SE Asian language and an active member of COTSEAL. To apply for or renew COTSEAL membership, click here. Participants must commit to attending both workshop sessions. Following the workshop, applicants will submit one of the following:

• A one-page reflection on how the workshop has impacted their publishing goals and where they plan on publishing
• A draft abstract for an article
• A proposal for a panel presentation at a national conference

Joint COTSEAL/SEALC Workshop on Heritage Language & Project-Based Learning at UCLA

Organized in collaboration with UCLA Center for Southeast Asian Studies 

and UCLA National Heritage Language Resource Center

COTSEAL and SEALC invite Southeast Asian language instructors from any US university or community college to apply to participate in the Heritage Language (HL) and Project-Based Learning (PBL) Workshop at UCLA on October 23-24, 2020.

This workshop will introduce the principles and practices of Project-based Learning to participants in order to strengthen the development of instructional materials that can be incorporated into the curricula of Southeast Asian language classes.
• Prior to the workshop, participants will be required to complete an online module that will focus on identifying and addressing issues pertinent to HL students as well as impart the principles and tools of PBL, including exemplary models of this approach.
• The two-day workshop will then build procedural knowledge – i.e., how to instantiate this approach in the classroom. Participants will learn how to select project topics and materials, how to structure the creation of products for students at different levels of proficiency, and how to assess learning.
• The goal of this workshop is for participants to acquire skills that will allow them to create a module that will be included in a bank of materials to be shared with other teachers.
• Following the workshop, SEALC will provide support and peer review of the development of modules prior to posting them online. SEALC will offer a modest honorarium to each participant who completes the post-workshop activities. Priority will be given to those applicants who commit to participate in the post workshop activities.
• The registration fees, accommodations, and meals during the workshop are covered for accepted participants.
• All participants must be active members of COTSEAL or become a member. (Dues are $30/one-year and $55/two-year.)

SEALC Professional Development Opportunities

The Southeast Asian Language Council (SEALC) has received a grant from the Henry Luce Foundation to offer professional development opportunities to Southeast Asian language instructors and develop instructional materials for the curricula of SE Asian language classes.

To accomplish the above objectives, SEALC offers opportunities for SE Asian language instructors to join training workshops and materials development projects. Fees for the registration, accommodation, and meals during the SEALC workshops are covered for accepted participants.
