SEALC Reading Materials Development Workshop for SEA Instructors
at U. Wisconsin-Madison

The Southeast Asian Language Council (SEALC) invites applications from Southeast Asian language instructors for a Reading Materials Development workshop at U. Wisconsin-Madison on April 13-15, 2023. This professional development opportunity will provide a valuable opportunity for participants to collaborate with colleagues in the U.S. and in Southeast Asia to develop reading proficiency lessons for the field of Southeast Asian languages. Lodging, meals, workshop fees, and a modest honorarium are provided for participants. Participants are asked to request airfare from their home university.  Please note that due to U.S. regulations some visa holders will not be able to receive the honorarium.

 

Activities

April 13-15 2023 Workshop: Participants will receive intensive training on developing reading proficiency materials from Stephen Tschudi, Specialist in Technology for Language Education, University of Hawaii at Manoa (retired) and will produce a prototype reading lesson in collaboration with colleagues from the same language with support from the trainer, Stephen Tschudi, and Erlin Barnard, SEALC pedagogy specialist.

 

March – June 2023 Language-specific working groups of two or more instructors will complete reading proficiency lessons at two levels with support from SEALC.

 

Follow-up workshop (hybrid at UCLA): There will be a two-day follow-up workshop on September 22-23, 2023 at which participants will report on their group’s achievements and receive feedback from the trainers. Once the materials are revised and finalized, the deliverables will be kept on file by SEALC and made accessible to all instructors of that language.

 

Eligibility and Application Process

Applicants must be Southeast Asian language instructors who have attended an ACTFL OPI workshop. Those who successfully completed the SEALC Reading Assessment project in Spring 2022 will receive priority.  Contact SEALC (SEALC@intl.wisc.edu) if you require assistance finding an ACTFL OPI workshop to attend.

·      A brief statement of interest addressing the following four points:

1.     Your career path up to this point and your position teaching a SEA language as a foreign language, including what levels of the language you teach.

2.     Your commitment to collaborate and develop pedagogical materials following the workshop.

3.     How this SEALC opportunity will benefit your professional development as a SEA language instructor.

4.     Written confirmation that you have attended an ACTFL OPI workshop, including the dates of the workshop attended (or a written agreement that you will attend an ACTFL OPI workshop before this workshop starts).

SEALC Professional Development Opportunities

The Southeast Asian Language Council (SEALC) has received a grant from the Henry Luce Foundation to offer professional development opportunities to Southeast Asian language instructors and develop instructional materials for the curricula of SE Asian language classes.

To accomplish the above objectives, SEALC offers opportunities for SE Asian language instructors to join training workshops and materials development projects. Fees for the registration, accommodation, and meals during the SEALC workshops are covered for accepted participants.

Applications being accepted for Oral Proficiency Workshop Dec. 14-18, 2019

Oral Proficiency Workshops for Southeast Asian Language Teachers

You are invited to apply to participate in the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and Language Specific Oral Proficiency Guidelines (OPG) Workshops for Southeast Asian Language Teachers at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Participants should plan to arrive in Madison on the evening of December 13, 2019.  Workshop activities will take place from December 14-18, 2019.

Applications are due by October 4, 2019.

The OPI workshop will introduce the ACTFL rating scale, the structure of the ACTFL OPI, techniques for conducting and rating the interviews, and its applications in the language classroom.

By the end of the workshop, you will be able to:

- interview learners to assess oral proficiency by evaluating interpersonal and presentational modes of oral communication. 

- apply proficiency principles to the tasks of curriculum design and instructional methods. 

- pursue ACTFL certification as OPI tester of your target language if you so desire.

On the last day of the workshop (the 18th), there will be sessions to discuss the development of language-specific Oral Proficiency Guidelines (OPG) for the SE Asian languages. The goal of this language-specific OPG project is to formulate proficiency guidelines that will address specific attributes of your language. This standardization will promote better communication among instructors and allow for more reliable tests. The language specific OPG will provide a common yard stick for the field and also allow students to gauge their own progress.

Those who have had prior OPI training are invited and encouraged to join the OPG workshop on December 18 (arriving on Dec 17).

Upon completion of the workshop, there will be follow-up activities online, involving collaboration among colleagues within language groups where there are sufficient numbers of teachers to form a working group. The language specific groups will collect and rate oral proficiency interviews. For those collecting and rating interviews, there will be a second workshop in Fall 2020 to consolidate the data and to formulate the oral proficiency guidelines (OPG) for your language (SEALC will provide modest honorarium and cover major travel expenses for this 2020 workshop).

Priority will be given to those applicants who make a firm commitment to participate in the follow-up activities.

To apply to participate in the Oral Proficiency workshops, please submit:

1. A one page statement describing your background in teaching a Southeast Asian language and your commitment to apply the knowledge you gain from the training to participate in the OPG project for your language.

(For those with prior OPI training who would like to join the Dec 18 OPG workshop and follow-up project, please state where and when your OPI training was obtained and your commitment to participate in the OPG project for your language)

2. Your CV covering your language teaching experience.  

With acceptance, your registration cost for the workshop is covered.

3. Submit a statement of need including information from your institution indicating what portion of the cost they can cover.  It is expected that participants from NRCs will seek travel funds from their institutions, but if full funding is not available, please specify level of travel support your institution can offer.

Luce Grant Announcement and ACTFL OPI Workshop

As discussed at our strategic planning meeting at the recent COTSEAL conference in Seattle, the University of Wisconsin in collaboration with SEALC submitted a grant proposal for a project “Professional and Materials Development to Strengthen Southeast Asian Language Instruction,” to the Henry Luce Foundation Southeast Asia Initiative.  We are delighted to report that this grant has now been funded and we will be starting with the proposed series of workshops in December. 

Here are links to the full announcement of the grant as well as a Save-the-Date announcement for the first grant sponsored workshop, the ACTFL OPI workshop to be held Dec 13-18, 2019 at the University of Wisconsin.  We hope that you will consider attending the workshop and also share this news with potentially interested colleagues.

2015-2016 Professional Development Workshops for Southeast Asian Language Teachers

Professional Development Workshops for Southeast Asian Language Teaching Staff 

to be held at U. California-Berkeley and U. Wisconsin-Madison

Sponsored by COTSEAL and the National Resource Centers for Southeast Asia

Southeast Asian language instructors are invited to apply to participate in two Professional Development Workshops; the first one is at UC Berkeley in September 2015 and the second one is at UW Madison in June 2016.

The first workshop will be from 18-20 September 2015 at U. California-Berkeley and will address:

1. Classroom Management: time management, use of target language, interactions in student-centered classrooms, work flow, use of projects, and grading issues
2. Content-based lesson design for LCTLs including rationale, text selection, lesson framework, lesson demonstration, and lesson design.

During the time between workshop one and two, participants will work in groups to develop two prototype lessons, receive feedback on the lessons, and make revisions. Each group will submit a videotape of one of the lessons being taught.

Upon completion of the lesson development described above, you will be invited to participate in the second workshop which will be held in June of 2016 at U. Wisconsin-Madison and will include:

1. Discussion of developed content-based lessons and the challenges of lesson development and implementation.
2. Discussion of the teaching of heritage and mixed classes, including the following topics appropriate materials, activities, and management of heritage classes.

To apply to participate in the two workshops send a one page statement describing your background in teaching a Southeast Asian language and your interests in expanding your knowledge of the field of second language teaching and your CV covering your language teaching experience.  With acceptance, your registration costs for the two workshops are covered.  To request funding for travel and per diem (lodging and meals) costs, include a statement of need and a statement from your institution indicating whether it can cover any of the costs.  Participants from NRCs may apply for a travel grant but are encouraged to seek travel funds from their home institutions.
