Position available: 2021 Summer Resident Director for Indonesian immersion program

American Councils for International Education is currently hiring 2021 summer Resident Director for Indonesian immersion program of the Critical Language Scholarship Program (CLS); see http://www.clscholarship.org  for more information about the program). Many members of COTSEAL may be especially interested to know that positions are available to support learners of Indonesian.

Resident Directors are the first-level of support for CLS students for the duration of the program. The Resident Director supports student success by ensuring the health and safety of the participants, helping them to maintain an Indonesian-only language policy, and helping to acclimate them to life in Indonesia.

The Resident Director position is a non-teaching position but requires a high level of Indonesian language. The approximate dates of the program are June to August; Resident Directors also attend a three-day training in May.

We seek individuals who have demonstrated student support experience for undergraduate and/or graduate students, or experience leading or supporting a study abroad or language immersion program. Applications review will begin in January 2021 and will be reviewed on a rolling basis until all positions are filled.

Project-Based Language Learning online course at NFLRC Registration deadline: Jan. 28, 2021

Envisioning Project-Based Language Learning (PBLL)

February 1 - March 8, 2021

Registration deadline: January 28, 2021

Envisioning Project-Based Language Learning (PBLL) is designed as a 5-week open-enrollment course for language educators beginning to learn about Project-Based Language Learning (PBLL). Successful learners will be able to describe essential features of high quality PBLL and to generate high-quality ideas for projects using the Product Square. Registration and the content for this MOOC (massive open online course) is FREE. However, if you wish to earn the optional digital badge for completion afterwards, you will need to meet the badge criteria and pay a nominal fee ($25) to have your submitted materials evaluated by NFLRC staff.

The following is a selection of targeted learning outcomes for the MOOC:

  • identify essential features of high-quality project-based learning (PBL)project designs
  • identify key concerns of project-based language learning (PBLL) compared to PBL in other disciplines
  • describe sources for project ideas
  • identify the three dimensions of “authenticity” in projects
  • craft an effective “driving question” (challenging question or problem)
  • generate multiple project ideas and test them using the Product Square, aligning product, audience, partners, and purpose
  • anticipate "Need-To-Knows" for a project's content, skills, and management

Instruction spans five modules, for an equivalent of five hours' contact time (or one-half CEU). As you progress through five topics, you will view videos, answer comprehension questions, and engage in asynchronous discussion, observing suggested due dates. There are also three assignments to submit, one each in Weeks 3, 4, and 5.

Joint COTSEAL/SEALC Workshop on Heritage Language & Project-Based Learning at UCLA

Organized in collaboration with UCLA Center for Southeast Asian Studies

and UCLA National Heritage Language Resource Center

COTSEAL and SEALC invite Southeast Asian language instructors from any US university or community college to apply to participate in the Heritage Language (HL) and Project-Based Learning (PBL) Workshop hosted by UCLA.

Part 1 of this workshop will take place virtually on Zoom on October 23-24, 2020 and Part 2 will be in Spring 2021. Applicants must commit to attend both parts of this workshop.

This workshop will introduce the principles and practices of Project-based Learning to participants in order to strengthen the development of instructional materials that can be incorporated into the curricula of Southeast Asian language classes.

Prior to the workshop, participants will be required to complete an online module that will focus on identifying and addressing issues pertinent to HL students as well as impart the principles and tools of PBL, including exemplary models of this approach.

The two-day workshop will then build procedural knowledge – i.e., how to instantiate this approach in the classroom. Participants will learn how to select project topics and materials, how to structure the creation of products for students at different levels of proficiency, and how to assess learning.

The goal of this workshop is for participants to acquire skills that will allow them to create a module that will be included in a bank of materials to be shared with other teachers.

Following the workshop, SEALC will provide support and peer review of the development of modules prior to posting them online. SEALC will offer a modest honorarium to each participant who completes the post-workshop activities. Priority will be given to those applicants who commit to participate in the post workshop activities.

The registration fees, accommodations, and meals during the workshop are covered for accepted participants.

All participants must be active members of COTSEAL or become a member. (Dues are $30/one-year and $55/two-year.)

To renew COTSEAL membership or become a member, please fill out this form: http://cotseal.net/COTSEAL_membership_form.pdf.
